Hyderabad: Mother kills her infant in a basin of water minutes after birth

Donald Trump expected to order temporary ban on refugees

Trump, who tweeted that a "big day" was planned on national security on Wednesday, is expected to ban for several months the entry of refugees into the United States, except for religious minorities escaping persecution, until more aggressive vetting is in place.

Another order will block visas being issued to anyone from Syria, Iraq, Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan and Yemen, said the aides and experts, who asked not to be identified.

The current proposal includes at least a four-month halt on all refugee admissions, as well as temporary ban on people coming from some Muslim majority countries, according to a representative of a public policy organization that monitors refugee issues. The person was briefed on the details of that proposed action by a government official.

In his tweet late on Tuesday, Trump said: "Big day planned on NATIONAL SECURITY tomorrow. Among many other things, we will build the wall!"

Jallikattu protests ease across Tamil Nadu, uneasy calm at Chennai's Marina Beach

CHENNAI: Calm returned to the Marina Beach and other protest venues across Tamil Nadu on Monday evening after a week-long intense pro-jallikattu agitation+ was brought under 'enforced control' by the state police.

In Chennai, riots marred the image of the student-backed demonstrations. "Vested interest groups" escalated the situation by pelting stones and hurling petrol bombs at the riot control police.

The scene at the Marina resembled that of a curfew zone with the roads leading to the protest venue blocked off by the police from all sides. The police lathicharged with vengeance whenever they ran into a rioter.

Miscreants set fire to the Ice House police station while many vehicles were burnt to ashes in the ensuing violence. As many as 140 policemen were hurt in the riots with at least 100 rioters also being injured.

Protesters clashed with police at Parthasarathy Temple arch near Marina. They set tyres on fire and threw them at the police. They threw petrol bombs too. A car was set on fire. Police used teargas to disperse the protesters.

Parliamentary panel summons RBI governor Urjit Patel on demonetisation move

MUMBAI/NEW DELHI: A parliamentary committee probing the government's decision to scrap high-value bank notes+ , has sent Reserve Bank of India governor Urijit Patel a list of questions on the demonetisation process, and has asked him to appear before it on January 20.

The Public Accounts Committee (PAC) has asked Patel to explain how the decision for demonetisation was taken, and for details on its impact on the country's economy, PAC Chairman and senior Congress member K V Thomas told Reuters.
The PAC has asked Patel to provide details on the value of currency that has been returned to the bank, the quantity of "black money" it has received and the amount of new currency released so far, Thomas said.

"We had decided to call the RBI governor sometime in December but because the Prime Minister had asked for 50 days, we decided to postpone it to sometime January," Thomas told Reuters. "We did not want to give it a political colour."
The PAC has also called other finance ministry officials, including Revenue Secretary Hasmukh Adhia and Finance Secretary Ashok Lavasa, Thomas said.

Urijit Patel is under fire+ from some politicians over shortages of replacement currency and restrictions on depositing old notes that have caused long queues at banks and ATMs. He's already set to testify before another parliamentary committee.

Pressure on the central bank and Patel has grown since Prime Minister Narendra Modi stunned the country on November 8 by announcing the withdrawal of legal tender for the old 500- and 1,000-rupee notes, removing 86 percent of the currency in circulation in a bid to crack down on the "shadow economy".
